The Real Country
Nowadays, Portugal is a less vast territory but it keeps the multiculturalism, along with its ancestral traditions and noble customs. The real Portugal is friendly and affable, full of traditions, with a peculiar rhythm.
In former times, the center of the country was habited by Lusitanians and Romans, who found iron and gold on the underground. With the Nationalization, the monarchs donated this area to the military orders - first, the Templars and then the Hospitallers. The influence of these orders was decisive during the period they have been in our country.
With the liberal revolution, roads, bridges and fountains were build. The Republic and its protagonists – José Grasses, Machado Santos, Sidonius Parents or Abilio Marcal – had their cradle here, and it has allowed the country to expand and develop.
Almost half a century of a single-party regime succeeded this period. António de Oliveira Salazar was its mentor. Austere and rural, Salazar ruled the country supported in tree values: God, the Country and the Family. This strike period in Portugal ended up with the liberalization of the overseas colonies, the fall of the totalitarian power and the desire of freedom from the poor and illiterate people living in the country at the time.
A revolutionary process followed the dictatorship – today is still easily identified throughout the country some works of the old regime (primary schools, bridges, fountains).
