This little big country

Over 90 Km, with about 3000 hours of sunshine a year, Portugal is one of the warmer countries of Europe.

Iberians, Celts, Romans, Suevi, Visigoths and Moors have passed by our country. Some of the most providential men of world history were born here. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, fought for an independent state during the twelfth century and he did succeed. Others have followed him, giving new frontiers and a genetic code that the writer Luís Vaz de Camões named as "Portuguese soul". During the navigators’ period, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portugal discovered new worlds, from Africa to Asia and America.

Portugal was the first country in the world to abolish the death penalty and the slavery; was also one of the first to embrace liberal ideals that were arriving from France; we assumed the republicanism when most of Europe countries were against this ideology; and that’s why today we have one of the most multicultural societies in the world.

This is the country where men like Fernando Pessoa, Luís Vaz de Camões, José Saramago, Pedro Nunes, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Vasco da Gama, Amalia Rodrigues, Vieira da Silva, Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eca de Queiroz, Ferdinand Magellan Pedro Hispano were born, among many others.
